Self Glow by James Read Golden Days Milky Tan Toner Review

If you’re looking for a really natural-looking way to add a little warmth to your complexion without the risk of a streaky or overly dark result, the Self Glow by James Read Golden Days Milky Tan Toner is well worth a look. It combines gradual self-tanning with hydrating skincare, making it feel much more like a treatment than a traditional facial fake tan.

I’m incredibly picky when it comes to tanning my face because I’m prone to freckles and hyperpigmentation, and I’ve found that some facial tanning products can make those areas look much more obvious. After using this consistently, I think it’s one of the nicest, most effortless facial tanning products I’ve tried.

Rather than being a traditional self-tanner, this is a hydrating facial mist that gradually develops into a soft, believable glow over several applications. It comes in an ultra-fine spray that feels more like applying a skincare essence than a fake tan, and it’s designed to slot seamlessly into your existing routine.

Alongside gradual tanning ingredients, it also contains a collection of hydrating and barrier-supporting skincare actives, so it leaves skin feeling comfortable instead of tight or dehydrated.

If, like me, you prefer your face to look naturally healthy rather than deeply bronzed, it’s exactly the kind of product that fits into a daily skincare routine.

Key Ingredients

One of the things that makes this stand out from many facial self-tanners is the amount of skincare built into the formula.

Hyaluronic Acid Complex – blend of four different forms of hyaluronic acid helps replenish moisture at multiple levels of the skin

PrimalHyal Hydra Plus™ – hydration complex provides both immediate and longer-lasting moisture

Dextrin – helps calm the skin and minimise the appearance of redness

CICA-PDRN – helps support the skin barrier while improving the feeling of elasticity

Liquorice Root Extract – helps brighten the complexion and improve the appearance of uneven skin tone over time.

How I Use It

I use this immediately after cleansing. Rather than reaching for an essence or hydrating mist first, I spray this directly onto clean skin before applying the rest of my skincare routine over the top.

The mist is beautifully fine, so it settles evenly across the skin without leaving wet patches or droplets. It absorbs surprisingly quickly, never feels sticky, and honestly doesn’t feel like you’ve applied fake tan at all.

I then continue with my serum, moisturiser and SPF as normal. The colour develops gradually over a few days, so it’s very easy to control.

If you prefer to customise your glow rather than apply a mist, take a look at my review of the Self Glow by James Read Sunbright Tinted Tan Drops. They mix into your moisturiser, whereas the Milky Tan Toner is a simple spray-and-go option.

My Review

Why I’m So Fussy About Face Tan

I’ve become much more cautious about fake tan on my face over the last few years. I’m prone to freckles and hyperpigmentation, and I’ve found that some facial tanning products seem to grab onto those areas, making them appear darker and much more noticeable. Instead of giving an even glow, they can actually exaggerate uneven pigmentation.

Because of that, I stopped self-tanning my face almost completely. I’d much rather have a slightly lighter face and simply add warmth with bronzer than risk ending up with patchy pigmentation that takes days to fade.

This toner doesn’t mess with my hyperpigmentation at all! Another product I recommend for this is the Gatineau Golden Glow Gradual Tan Face Serum* – also great for even results and lots of skincare benefits. You can save 20% on that with code REEGLOW via this link*

The Application

The application is probably my favourite thing about it. The mist is exceptionally fine, so there’s no rubbing, no streaking and no worrying about blending around the hairline. It genuinely feels like applying skincare rather than fake tan.

It sinks in quickly, doesn’t feel sticky and leaves my skin feeling hydrated rather than stripped.

The Finish

The glow is beautifully subtle. This isn’t the sort of product that’s going to leave you dramatically darker overnight, and for me that’s exactly why I like it. It simply adds a healthy-looking warmth that makes skin look fresher, more even and naturally radiant.

I don’t actually want my face to match the depth of tan on my body. When I’m wearing body tan, I much prefer my face to look a little softer and more natural, then I’ll use bronzer to tie everything together.

The result looks much more believable and far less obvious than using a stronger facial self-tanner.

An Unexpected Bonus: It’s Brilliant for Hands

I’ve actually found another way to use it. Because I wash my hands constantly, the tops of my hands usually fade much faster than the rest of my body tan.

A quick mist over the backs of my hands, followed by gently rubbing them together, helps blend everything back in without having to apply a full layer of self-tan.

It’s also handy for softening any areas where body tan has started to wear away and you just want to even things out a little. It’s become a surprisingly useful little touch-up product.

Is It Worth It?

If you’re someone who loves a subtle, believable glow rather than a deep tan, I think the Self Glow by James Read Golden Days Milky Tan Toner is excellent.

What really makes it stand out is that it feels like a hydrating skincare product first and a fake tan second. The formula is comfortable to wear, incredibly easy to apply and develops so gradually that it’s almost impossible to overdo.

For me, it’s become one of those products that simply helps my skin look healthier, fresher and more awake, without looking obviously tanned.

If you’ve struggled with facial fake tan highlighting pigmentation or dry patches, this is one of the gentlest options I’ve used.

FAQ

Does the James Read Milky Tan Toner develop overnight?

The colour develops gradually over several hours and becomes more noticeable with repeated use, making it easy to build the level of glow you want.

Can I apply skincare afterwards?

Yes. I use it immediately after cleansing, then continue with the rest of my skincare routine once it has absorbed.

Is it drying?

Not at all. Thanks to the multiple hydrating ingredients, my skin actually feels more hydrated after using it.

Is it suitable if you have pigmentation?

Everyone’s skin is different, but I’ve found it much gentler than many facial self-tanners. Because the colour develops so subtly, it doesn’t noticeably cling to my areas of pigmentation or make them look darker.

Can you use it every day?

Yes. The gradual formula makes it ideal for daily use until you reach your preferred level of glow, then you can simply use it as needed to maintain the colour.

Final Thoughts

This feels like exactly the kind of facial tanner I’d recommend to people who normally avoid facial self-tan.

It’s subtle, foolproof and genuinely enjoyable to use because it behaves much more like a hydrating skincare mist than a traditional fake tan. Add in the skincare ingredients and the beautifully fine mist, and it becomes one of the easiest ways I’ve found to give my complexion a healthy, holiday-like glow without sacrificing the natural look I prefer.
