Best Techniques for Smoothing Out and Removing Glitter *updated 1/30/24*

Noodles Nail Polish is all about the glitter, all the time. While we all love the bling, it can be a pain to remove. Oh, and it can be known to eat topcoat which leaves texture on the nail after it dries. If you are especially sensitive to feeling your polish, make sure your topcoat is a thick one, or apply a second coat of a thinner one. 

Instead of applying 2 coats of thick topcoat, several indie brands have come out with a product that you use after your last coat of polish and before your topcoat. These are generally thick and “fill in” the gaps left from the glitter. Here are several products I use and recommend (in no particular order):

6. Smooth and Shine Duo from Esmaltes da Kelly (available through Polish Pickup some months)

To use these glitter grabbing topcoats, it’s best to let the polish to dry for several minutes before applying. If you apply the glitter grabber too quickly, the nail polish can eat up the glitter grabber a little, making the polish continue to have a little texture, even after the addition of a quick-dry topcoat. Using it this way requires a little more patience, but it’s totally worth it. 

Noodles Nail Polish Baby’s Breath (2 coats)

People don’t talk about baby’s breath anymore. Remember back in the 90’s when bouquets always had baby’s breath in them? I can’t remember the last time I had flowers with them in there. Anyway, Baby’s Breath the nail polish is a white crelly base with soft green shimmer and metallic aqua/melon green/light gold glitters in various hexagonal sizes. I especially love the shimmer in this one. You’ll probably hear me call lots of these polishes “soft” because of the whites and muted pastels, so be warned. You know I love a white crelly, and I bet you do, too. This is 2 coats for full opacity, but it does dry with texture due to all the glitter. 

Up next we have another soft shade, Blue Hydrangea. This one is definitely on the sheerer side compared to some of the others. It’s a semi-sheer pale blue crelly base with green/blue shimmer, white and pale mint matte glitters, and lime/gold iridescent glitters. I used 3 thin coats, but as you can see, you can still see a little of the nail underneath. I couldn’t really use any thicker coats, otherwise it wouldn’t dry right if you know what I mean. I expected it to be slightly more blue on the nail, but it’s super pale when applied. This isn’t a negative, just an observation. This one is choke full of glitter, so I recommend a glitter-smoothing topcoat for pretty much all of these. 

Up next we have one of my top picks from the collection, Darling Dahlia. This one is a light cream crelly base color with metallic rose gold/melon green/copper glitters in various hexagonal sizes. I just love the glitter colors in this one. There’s just something about the combination of the melon green and copper that really draws the eye. This one also only needed 2 coats for full opacity, and dried with texture due to the glitter. Love it!

Glitter topper time! You don’t have to use this one as a topper, though. My pictures show English Rose as both a topper and on its own in 3 coats. I honestly don’t know which way I like it better! English Rose is a clear-based glitter topper metallic rose gold/melon green/lavender/copper glitters and matte lavender glitters in various hexagonal shapes. I went ahead and used it over a dusty lavender Zoya polish named Kayleigh and I think it goes well. If you use it alone, I recommend using regular strokes as well as some dabbing motions for the perfect glitter placement. If using alone, you will definitely need a glitter smoothing topcoat as I’m not sure if using 2 coats of topcoat would be enough to smooth it out. 

Yet another favorite from the collection is French Lavender! It’s a pale green crelly base with matte, holo, and metallic lavender glitters and a touch of scattered holo thrown in there. I never knew how much I’d love a minty green with lavender purple! I thought I’d get away with 2 coats, but depending on your application and nail length, you may need to use a third like I did. This one is a beauty, and I don’t have anything like it. 

Noodles Nail Polish Secret Garden (2 coats)

Last, but certainly not least, we have Secret Garden which is a dusty medium purple crelly base with metallic rose gold/lilac/copper/light gold/aqua/melon green glitters and matte lavender glitters in various hexagonal sizes. This one has slightly chunkier glitter sizes like those in Blue Hydrangea. As always, Natalie works her magic with choosing just the right color combinations to make the perfect polish. This one was a bit more opaque and only needed 2 coats, but a glitter-smoothing topcoat is recommended yet again if you want that smooth, squishy look.
